Dealing With Print Cartridges

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

If you work in an office, chances are you don’t change the copier or printer cartridge because it’s too messy or you just don’t know how to do it. That’s according to a new Zogby survey, commissioned by Xerox, of more than 2,000 office workers across the U.S. aimed to better understand some of the reasons behind office printing habits.

Of those surveyed, more than 1,000 respondents said they have experienced a mess when changing a printer/copier toner cartridge.

The mess, plus a lack of knowledge on how to change a printer cartridge, is why more than 10 percent of respondents typically put off printing until someone else changes the toner cartridges.

And though environmental stewardship is on the rise, not everyone knows exactly what happens to the empty printer cartridges once they are removed. Nearly one in five respondents said the old office printer/copier cartridges simply get thrown in the trash.

Enter Xerox’s Phaser 8560 and 8860 Solid Ink printers and MFPs – devices that are easy to use, produce incredible color prints, and are great for the environment. At the heart of these devices are non-toxic, crayon-like sticks of mess-free, solid ink. Users simply unwrap the recycled packaging and place the stick into slots on the top of the device (This can be done even while the machine is on). The packaging goes into the office recycle bin, and the ink sticks are melted and sprayed onto a drum, which is rolled and pressed onto the paper for crisp, vibrant prints.

Gone are the days of having to roll up the sleeve and change bulky, messy toner or inkjet cartridges.

Solid Ink Fast Facts:

Easy Being Green
*The compact “cartridge-free” ink sticks do not contain plastic casings and are wrapped in recycled paper and plastic, reducing waste produced by the device by 90 percent compared to equivalent laser printers.
*After 192,000 prints, a color laser can produce 450 pounds of waste, while a solid ink printer produces only 23 pounds.

Color for the Cost of Black & White
*The Phaser 8860 printer and MFP make color printing the same cost as black-and-white and offer more consistent image quality page after page and on any media.

Quotes:
“After seeing a print sample from Xerox’s Phaser 8860MFP color multifunction printer and learning more about its affordable color pricing model, we knew we had found the right productivity tool for our office,” said Philip Berlin, attorney & mediator, The Berlin Law Firm. “Not only did the Phaser offer color prints at the same price as identical black and white prints – something we did not know was ever an option before – but the print quality rivaled what we had only seen from commercial printers. And with easy to replace consumables, our office has experienced increased efficiency over dealing with old, messy toner cartridge replacements.”

Time to Think Electronic Copies

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Nuance Communications, a leading provider of speech and imaging solutions, today announced several tips aimed at helping people achieve at least one New Year’s resolution for 2009: getting organized, both at home and in the office. “Getting more organized” is consistently one of the top ten New Year’s resolutions, according to a recent survey of over 300,000 people conducted by 10millionresolutions.com.

The time and cost of organizing paper clutter can be surprisingly quick and affordable, especially when compared to the cost associated with folders, boxes, containers and storage space needed to store paper. Nuance’s award-winning scanning solutions - including PaperPort, OmniPage and PDF Converter Professional - have been used by millions to turn piles of paper into organized documents on their PC, where they can be searched, stored and easily shared using email and the Web.

The National Association of Professional Organizers estimates that most people spend 55 minutes a day looking for things they know they own but can’t find. According to a recent report by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Americans spend on average more than a day and more than $200 collecting, calculating and compiling numbers for their tax returns. With the IRS now accepting electronic copies of receipts, people can scan tax documents, organize them on their PC using products like PaperPort, and easily access them whenever they are needed.

There are simple steps that people can take to get organized in 2009:

1) Put your Scanner to Work - With nearly every All-in-One printer outfitted with a scanner, millions of people have the ability to turn paper into organized digital documents. New advances in software make scanning easier and more powerful than ever.

2) Save a Day a Month - By simply adding PaperPort to their PC, people can scan as easily as they can make a copy, creating electronic paper copies that can be easily organized. Better still, PaperPort includes optical character recognition (OCR) technology that makes scanned documents as searchable as email and Microsoft Office documents. With a simple keyword or phrase users can find any scanned document in seconds.

3) Save Another Day a Month - It can take hours to manually re-create existing paper documents using a word processor, but just seconds to scan paper into a fully-formatted Microsoft Word, Excel or PowerPoint file. Using Nuance OmniPage can help by automatically turning existing paper and PDF into documents that people can edit, saving considerable time and effort.

4) Go Green with Electronic Paper - Email has helped many of us avoid the unnecessary use of paper, but we still print when we can share ‘electronic paper.’ Nearly everyone is familiar with the PDF format, with millions of the same-as-paper documents on the Web and shared as email attachments. Nuance PDF Converter Professional lets people create their own PDF copies of documents, letting them share documents that are universally viewed, almost always are smaller in file size, and more secure than sending the source document. People can also print Web pages to PDF on their PC - such as travel confirmations, online purchase receipts and more - making it easy to replace printing to paper with printing to electronic paper.

Copies Gets Into Managed Print Services

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

Ricoh Professional Services (RPS) of Ricoh Americas Corporation, one of the leading providers of digital office equipment, today launched a new service to minimize the complexity and cost of printing in today’s highly networked business environment. Managed Print Services (MPS) was created to streamline companies’ current print operations by working with RPS to help reach critical business goals from a productivity and financial standpoint.

The nature of printing has changed dramatically over the years. In the past, printing was simple as everyone either shared one device or had a personal printer. Now the printing landscape is more complex with multiple printers, multifunction products (MFPs), servers and drivers comprising the output environment picture. In addition, users are continuously increasing their standards in regard to results, security, sustainability and cost. To address these demands, Ricoh created the MPS offering. This flexible program makes it easy to outsource all or part of the print management process - without giving up any control over speed, quality or performance. Best of all, users only pay for actual output and work with one point of contact - an MPS expert - in order to streamline the process.

Users of this program participate in a four-part process with MPS experts in order to create a package of services to help them reach their printing goals. The four stages of the process include:

-Assess: Provides a detailed overview of current costs and process workflows, along with maps of output device locations

-Design: Recommends a future plan based on the assessment results with specific productivity, sustainability and security measures built it

-Implement: Includes the execution of the plan in order to help users realize the benefits outlined in the Design phase

-Manage: Helps organizations stick to the plan and adapt to any unexpected changes - enabling projected cost-savings and productivity gains to be realized

Outsourcing all or part of the print management process helps reveal hidden costs, identify savings and significantly reduce spending on output. MPS experts work with an organization to remove underused printers, MFPs, fax machines, etc. in order to consolidate output among fewer and faster centralized systems and produce a more strategic document workflow process. In addition, overhead costs are reduced with devices that use less energy, paper and toner and users are not asked to pay any additional costs other than one monthly charge for actual page counts.

In addition to lowering total cost of ownership, other benefits of MPS include sustainable solutions and security options to help protect confidential documents. Security is a main focus and benefit of the MPS program. MPS experts work behind the scenes by utilizing remote monitoring and management tools to make sure an organization’s print environment is running smoothly and sensitive documents are kept confidential. Usage and workflow are closely monitored in order to achieve optimal device-to-user-rations and make sure the fleet of devices is aligned properly with actual volume. Secure printing, file encryption, and removable hard drives all support regulatory compliance initiatives and are part of the standard features that MPS provides.

From an environmental standpoint, optimizing print environments can help organizations improve their corporate reputation by aligning with “green” initiatives and taking a stand in regards to saving energy, reducing paper usage and maximizing recyclables. The hardware and software that Ricoh MPS experts implement have low emissions in order to maintain air quality and protect the environment.

“At Ricoh we are constantly trying to develop new programs and services to make our customers lives easier. As such, we are proud to introduce our Managed Print Services offering as it not only takes the complexity out of the printing process, but also improves bottom line results,” said Carl Sills, vice president, Ricoh Professional Services, Ricoh Americas Corporation.

Love and money - another west Texas wind energy story

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Michael Giberson

“We used to curse the wind,” Max Watt said. “Now we love it.”

The aptly named Max Watt is a Nolan County, Texas landowner benefiting from the wind energy boom. The quote is from a Reuters story describing how the boom in wind farm construction in west Texas has led to a boom in school facility construction. More: “It’s the greatest thing that has happened here,” said James Bible, superintendent of the Blackwell Consolidated Independent School District, where the shell of a new school is rising, financed mainly by tax revenue from windmills. “It’s like day and night for the school districts.”

First RGGI auction today, results to be posted Monday

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Michael Giberson

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative held their first CO2 permit auction today. At the WSJ Environmental Capital blog, Keith Johnson said RGGI “is more likely to start with a whimper than a bang,” and asks “Will it work?”

Johnson reports:

RGGI’s first auction today, of about 12.5 million emissions permits, isn’t attracting a lot of interest. For starters, that’s because the program’s overseers allocated more pollution permits than power companies need to meet their obligations. That means there’s no red-hot demand to get permits. At the same time, utilities have three years to start really tightening their belts, so there isn’t a lot of urgency to get emissions credits in the bank.

I can imagine the the program designers were interested in not beginning with a bang. After all, if you toss industry into a pot of boiling water, it will hop right out.

Laser Multifunction Printers

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008

Making it easier for small offices, workgroups and home offices to leverage big office technology, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in document imaging and office solutions, today introduced two new color laser multifunction printers. Canons new imageCLASS MF9150c and MF9170c expand the Companys extensive laser multifunction printer portfolio and provide small and home offices with multiple options to choose the right solution for their business.

The new imageCLASS MF9150c and MF9170c models, which will be available through resellers, were designed for any size office workflow with the availability to choose the optimal speed and value-added features all in a single device. Moving from multiple single function devices to a single streamlined multifunction laser platform device is inherently more beneficial in limited office-space environments. The new imageCLASS products allow for a better use of space while also accommodating all the tasks previously performed by four or more devices.

The Canon imageCLASS MF9150c and MF9170c perform black-and-white and color printing and copying at the same speed of up to 22 pages-per-minute (ppm)i. Canons Pure Black Technology ensures the richest blacks by utilizing only the black toner in comparison with the traditional methods of combining toners when scanning documents.

The Canon imageCLASS MF9150c and MF9170c models also support the mobile professional by supporting the integration of USB memory media into business workflows. This allows users to directly store documents scanned with the imageCLASS device in black-and-white or full color to a users USB memory media device, or print documents out from the USB memory media device without connecting to the network. Through the Direct Print feature, users can print out documents from a range of USB memory drives, including USB Memory Stick, Compact Flash and SD cards, which can plug directly into the imageCLASS MF9150c and MF9170c control panel.

The imageCLASS MF9170c is bundled with standard features for out-of-the-box business productivity, including PCL5e/6 support, and advanced sending capabilities, while the imageCLASS MF9150c is highly configurable, with a number of sending and security options.

For the added benefit of fax capability, the imageCLASS MF9150c and MF9170c incorporate a 33.6 Kbps Super G3 faxii, with a strong list of fax features, including 200 speed dial locations, up to 1,000-page memory capacity and one hour of memory back-up.

Paper handling is achieved with each model incorporating a duplex ADF that can handle up to 50-page originals to allow two-sided copying, printing, scanning and faxing. Each model is also equipped with a 250-sheet front-loading paper cassette, plus a 100-sheet multipurpose tray that accepts a variety of media. An optional 500-sheet cassette pedestal is available. Each device can copy up to 8.5 inches x 14 inches (legal) from both the ADF and platen glass.

For added flexibility and user convenience, the imageCLASS MF9150c and MF9170c help to increase productivity with a built-in Ethernet port for networking, and a USB 2.0 Hi-Speed interfaceiii, providing optimal speed when printing, scanningiv and faxing directly from a PC.

Each model incorporates the Canon Single Cartridge System, which combines the toner, drum and development unit in one easy-to-replace cartridge, resulting in excellent image quality retention and eliminating the complication and warehousing of separate toner and drum consumables.

A further measure of Canon’s commitment to small and home office customers is the inclusion of a one year limited warranty with one year of on-site service.

The Canon imageCLASS MF9150c and MF9170c meet the ENERGY STAR® guidelines set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Energy (DOE). Canon is a long-time ENERGY STAR partner, and is a strong advocate of consumer education of energy-efficient products through its product labeling and environmental programs. ENERGY STAR is the joint effort of the EPA and DOE designed to identify and promote energy efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The imageCLASS MF9150c and imageCLASS MF9170c, which will be available through authorized Canon resellers, come with estimated prices of $2,495 and $2,995 respectively. All of these devices are scheduled to be available in November 2008.
